Brake Pedal Going to the Floor — Take This Seriously
If your brake pedal travels all the way to the floor before the brakes engage — or goes to the floor without the car slowing properly — this is a serious brake failure. Do not continue driving. The steps below explain what's likely happening and what you should do.
Immediate Action
If you experience pedal travel to the floor while driving:
- Pump the brakes repeatedly — this can sometimes temporarily restore partial pressure.
- Use the handbrake gradually (not sharply, which can cause a spin) to slow the car.
- Downshift if possible.
- Get off the road safely and stop.
- Do not drive the vehicle again until it has been inspected and repaired.
Common Causes
Complete Brake Fluid Leak A significant leak from a brake line, hose, calliper, or master cylinder can drain enough fluid that the system loses hydraulic pressure entirely. Check for puddles under the car — brake fluid is typically clear to light yellow and has a slightly oily feel.
Failed Brake Master Cylinder If the master cylinder's internal seals fail completely, it cannot build pressure at all. The pedal will drop straight to the floor. There may be no visible external leak because the fluid bypasses internally.
Broken Brake Line A corroded, cracked, or physically damaged brake line can rupture suddenly, causing immediate fluid loss and total pressure failure. Older vehicles are particularly susceptible.
Boiled Brake Fluid (Vapour Lock) On long downhill stretches with repeated heavy braking, brake fluid can boil. The resulting vapour compresses instead of transmitting pressure, and the pedal can go soft or all the way to the floor. The brakes may recover once they cool.
Air in the System A large amount of air in the lines — from a recent repair done without proper bleeding, or from running the reservoir dry — can cause very little or no pedal pressure.
WoF and Legal Implications
A vehicle with brake failure cannot legally be driven on public roads. If your WoF is up, it will not pass until the brake system is fully repaired and operating correctly.
Get a Tow
This is not a drive-it-to-the-mechanic situation. Call a tow truck and have the vehicle transported to a workshop. Attempting to drive with a floor-level pedal risks your life and others on the road.
