What Are Heat Shields?
Heat shields are thin metal plates fitted around hot components — primarily the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, and exhaust pipe — to protect surrounding components (wiring, fuel lines, carpet, body panels) from radiant heat. They're not structural and serve a purely protective function.
On NZ vehicles, especially those exposed to coastal salt air and road grime, heat shield corrosion is common. The spot welds and bolts holding them in place rust and fail, allowing the shields to become loose.
What a Heat Shield Rattle Sounds Like
- A metallic buzzing, rattling, or tinkling sound from under the car
- Most prominent when the exhaust is cold (it contracts) or when first warmed up (it expands)
- Changes over bumps and rough road surfaces as the loose shield vibrates
- Sometimes appears at a specific RPM range (resonance frequency of the shield)
- Usually disappears or changes when you lightly tap the brakes (changes exhaust system position)
How to Confirm It's the Heat Shield
The simplest confirmation: with the engine off (but potentially recently run so the exhaust is still warm — be careful of burns), have a helper watch the underside while you move the car slightly, or shake the exhaust system from a safe distance. A loose heat shield will visibly rattle.
Alternatively, a mechanic on a hoist can identify a loose shield immediately.
Is It Dangerous?
A slightly loose heat shield is usually not dangerous in the short term. However:
- If the shield is hanging very low, it can ground on road surfaces, become caught on obstacles, or completely detach — becoming a road hazard
- A missing heat shield exposes components above or around the exhaust to significant heat, which over time can melt wiring, damage fuel lines, or discolour bodywork
- WoF inspectors can fail a vehicle if the heat shield is in danger of falling off or is causing a safety concern
Fixes
Tightening or rewelding: A workshop can reweld a loose shield stitch for $50–$120 NZD labour. Simple but effective.
Clamping: A jubilee clamp or stainless steel exhaust clamp around a loose section of shield is a common workshop fix — inexpensive and durable.
Replacement: If the shield is rusted through or badly deteriorated, a new replacement (where available) costs $50–$200 NZD for the part plus fitment.
Removal: If the shield is already in poor condition and a replacement isn't available, a mechanic can remove it entirely. Note that this is not advisable if there are components directly above the exhaust that would then be exposed.
